Community Service
Health Visitors are based in the Health Centre and can be contacted on 01639 825952/825950. The Health Visitors are specially trained in disease prevention and are interested in promoting good health for all ages.
District Nurses. You can contact the District nurses by ringing 01639 825923. They hold a clinic every day between 10.00am and 11.30am. If you cannot get to the surgery and need a home visit please contact the district nurses to arrange a convenient time.
Baby Clinic
Baby Clinic Monday 1.15.pm - 3.00pm This clinic is held every Monday between 1.15pm and 3.30pm. The clinic is held by a Doctor, Practice Nurse and Health Visitor in order to provide child health development checks. All children under school age have regular reviews. You will receive a letter inviting you and your child to attend for the child development checks.At the first development check we will arrange for the mum to have her post natal check and the baby to have their first immunisation.
Child Immunisations
Babies have their immunisations according to the national Vaccination Programme.The first vaccination is when baby is two months old. Diseases which are vaccinated against include diptheria, whooping cough, tetanus, meningitis, mumps, measles and german measles. Giving your baby all these vaccinations will protect him/her from disease that can have serious complication and even death.
The practice believes that vaccination is a key factor in protecting children.The Health Visitors can be contacted for more information.
Ante Natal & Post Natal
We have a full ante natal and post natal service provided by our community midwifes.We will share your care between these health care professionals and the hospital. Please ask at reception for advice on the role of the Doctor, communtiy midwife and health visitor in ante natal and post natal care. The midwife makes routine post natal visits and when she stops visiting, you will be contacted by our Health Visitor.
Cervical Smears
Well Women Clinic Wednesday 9a.m till 12p.m.
All women aged between 20 and 65 should have a cervical smear test every three years. You will receive a letter reminding you of when your smear test is due. You should make an appointment for about half way between your period. Sister Burchell runs a regular well women clinic weekly. You will need to make an appointment for this clinic
Coronary Heart Disease
Tuesday 10.00am - 11.45 am
If you have had a heart attack or angina we will offer you an appointment for a review every year. We will review your condition and help you understand how to lower your risk factors to prevent further illness. The clinic is run by a Doctor and Practice Nurse.
COPD and Asthma
If you have COPD ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) we will regularly monitor your care and help you to improve the way you manage your condition yourself. We will offer you a review including spirometery every year with the practice nurse. We will review treatment every three to six months for children with more severe asthma. We will review your peakflow and inhaler techniques and give you up to date information regarding medication.
Diabetic Clinic
Wednesday 1.30pm - 3.00pm We aim to achieve good control of diabetes and prevent complications by improving education and regular check ups. If you have diabetes we will write to you to offer you an appointment for an annual check up. There is also a follow up clinic if you need to be seen more often. All diabetic patients are encouraged to attend the diabetic Retinopathy Screening Services. Appointments will be sent automatically by the new All wales Service. A comprehensive education service is available and is particularly useful for newly diagnosed diabetics.Please ask Sister Burchell for details.
Additional Services
Minor Surgery: Wednesday 1.15pm - 1.45pm.
- A limited range of Minor Operations are available at the surgery. These will be performed after discussion with the Doctor.
Cryotherapy
- A clinic is held every third Wednesday of the month. We use cryotherapy(treatment with extreme cold) to remove warts and other skin legions.
INR Monitoring
- We provide anti coagulation monitoring through routine blood tests in order to monitor warfarin medication.
Rheumatology Monitoring
- The practice takes part in shared care arrangements with the rheumatology department of Neath Port Talbot Hospital in oder to monitor patient's blood results. Appointments can be made at the practice to have these blood tests.
Influenza and Pnuemonia Vaccinations
These are available each Autumn for patients 65 years and over and patients with certain medical conditions such as chronic chest problems,diabetes, chronic kidney disease and heart disease. Special sessions are usually held in October at the Briton Ferry Community Centre where no appointment is necessary.
Phlebotomy Services
- We have a blood taking service every morning from 8.30am to 11.30am. These are run by our practice nurses and phlebotomist.
